What are QR codes?

QR or 'Quick Response' codes are 2-D barcodes that can be scanned by a mobile phone's camera and transfer information

Depending on the type of code, it could contain a vCard, link to a website, send a text message , simply display a message or discount code

All that's required is a mobile phone equipped with an easily available QR code reader or app.

How does it work?

A web-enabled* mobile with a camera > QR code app available/downloaded on phone > Scan/take a picture of the code > Phone reads it and depending on code.

  • Send you a link/web page
  • Save contact info from a vCard

  • Display a text message with discount code, announcement, information, etc.
  • Prompt you to send a text to a specified number

Usage

To date, QR codes have been successfully embedded on: websites, magazine ads, direct mail, coupons, email marketing, billboards, in-store advertising and contest entry forms.

Usage of QR codes are virtually limitless.

Basically, if you want to transmit any kind of information to end users instantly and with minimal effort on their part, use QR codes. It's easy, simple, and currently has a 'cool' factor associated with it.

For Retailers, we have zeroed in on a few particular usages:

  • QR codes on the storefront could point customers to the Retailers' website, online enquiry form, 'Shop Online', or the Current Offers section.
  • Supplement Retail Space: Place QR codes next to products on shelf that could point to: Product reviews and information, How to videos / instructions for usage, Other variants of products, related products, or order form for out of stock products.
  • Mobile Marketing / Coupons: Send mobile coupons to existing customers and new customers via SMS and track redemptions via QR codes

Some notes and pointers on QR codes

  • When deploying QR codes and marketing with them, be clear to customers that the code adds value. It gives them all kinds of information with minimal effort on their part.
  • Keep in mind that only customers with properly enabled phones can use QR codes. Be sure your customers are in this segment and ready for the concept.
  • Integrate other points of contact into QR codes to build a lasting relationship and communication channel with customers. QR codes enable brands to get a 'foot in the door' and this has to be built upon through additional communication channels such as short codes, virtual numbers, messaging, and other communication mediums.
  • Every scan of a QR code represents a specific opportunity that must not be lost. That opportunity could simply be an online form, request for information, call to action for a purchase, etc.
  • Deploying a robust mobile communication channel that integrates QR codes with enterprise messaging is a critical step in ensuring every scan yields some value.
  • The long term prospects of QR codes may be debatable, however; today they enjoy a 'cool and hip' factor, and coupled with the increased usage of smart phones, aren't going to go away anytime soon. Capitalize now!
